Who we are
A publishing team for authors who intend to stay in charge of their book
Harbour Bridge Press is an Australian publishing services company based in Parramatta, New South Wales. We work with writers who have finished something and want it produced properly, without signing their book away to do it.
Some authors come to us with a polished draft that needs a copy edit and a cover. Others arrive with a first attempt that needs structural work before it is ready for anything else. We will tell you honestly which of those you have, and quote only for the work your manuscript actually requires.

Take one service or the whole sequence. Most authors need three or four, and we will say so plainly rather than selling you a package you do not need.

You hold your copyright throughout. We provide services on your book; we do not acquire rights to it, and we do not take a share of your royalties.
Honest assessment first
If your manuscript needs structural work, we will say so before quoting for a cover. Selling you design work on a draft that is not ready helps nobody.
Australian editorial standards
Australian English spelling and usage as the default, with the Macquarie Dictionary as our reference unless your book calls for something else.
A named contact
You deal with the same person across the project rather than being handed between departments each time a stage finishes.
Priced by the manuscript
Quotes are built from your actual word count, genre and condition of the draft, not from a tier you have to squeeze into.
Files you keep
At the end you receive your print-ready PDF, cover files and ebook files. If you ever want to move elsewhere, everything travels with you.

The publishing journey
Seven stages, and you approve each one
Nothing moves to the next stage until you have signed off on the last. Timelines depend on manuscript length and how much editorial work is involved.
Manuscript consultation
We talk through your book, your readers and what you want from publishing. No cost, no obligation, and no pressure to commit on the call.
Editorial assessment
An editor reads a representative sample and reports on structure, pacing, voice and technical accuracy, then recommends the level of editing needed.
Editing and refinement
Developmental, line or copy editing as required, working in tracked changes so you can see and accept every alteration.
Cover and interior design
Cover concepts developed against your genre, then interior typesetting for the print edition and a separate reflowable ebook build.
Publishing setup
ISBN allocation, copyright page, metadata, categories and keywords, plus account and imprint setup on your chosen platforms.
Distribution
Your book goes live for print and digital sale. We handle the technical upload, proof approval and listing checks.
Launch and marketing
Listing copy, author assets and a practical launch plan you can actually execute, with optional ongoing promotional support.
Editing and production
Manuscript preparation, done in the right order
Editing is layered work, and doing it out of sequence wastes money. There is no point proofreading a chapter that a structural edit is about to remove. We start at the level your draft needs and work down.
- Developmental editing: structure, argument, pacing and whether the book delivers what it promises.
- Line editing: rhythm, clarity and voice, sentence by sentence.
- Copy editing: grammar, consistency, style sheet and factual sense-checking.
- Proofreading: a final read of typeset pages for errors that survived everything before.
- Typesetting: margins, chapter openings, running heads and front matter that meets convention.
- Cover design: front, spine and back, built to your printer's exact specification.

Getting your book listed and sellable
Distribution for independent authors runs mostly through print-on-demand and digital retail. We set up your title correctly the first time, because metadata mistakes are tedious to unpick once a book is live.

We do not guarantee placement in physical bookshops. Australian retailers make their own stocking decisions, and any publisher who promises shelf space is overstating what they control. What we can do is make sure your book is correctly listed, properly priced and available to order.
Ownership and control
Your book stays yours
This is the point where independent publishing differs most from a traditional deal, and it is worth being precise about it.
Harbour Bridge Press is a services company. You engage us to do defined work on your book. We do not acquire your copyright, we do not take an ongoing percentage of your sales, and we do not hold your title in a catalogue you cannot leave. Retail accounts are set up in your name wherever the platform allows it, which means the royalties are paid to you directly.

Publishing costs vary widely, and a fixed price list would either overcharge short books or underquote complex ones. What your project costs depends on a handful of real variables.

A short, clean manuscript needing a copy edit, cover and formatting sits at the lower end; a long or heavily illustrated book with developmental editing sits considerably higher. We quote per project after reading a sample, and the quote is itemised so you can see each stage separately.
Yes. We are a services company, not a rights-acquiring publisher. You retain copyright, you keep the royalties the retailer pays you, and you can move your book elsewhere at any time. The specific terms are set out in your service agreement before work starts.
Yes. Amazon KDP handles both Kindle and print-on-demand paperbacks, and titles appear on the Amazon Australia storefront as well as internationally. We can set this up in your name so royalties are paid directly to you, or guide you through doing it yourself.
Not for independent publishing. Agents matter when you are pitching to traditional publishers who do not accept unagented submissions. If you are publishing independently, you deal directly with the retailers and printers, and an agent is not part of that process.
Most of the people we speak to are publishing for the first time. We will walk through the process in plain language and tell you what your manuscript needs before you commit to anything.
For a standard-length manuscript in reasonable shape, expect roughly three to six months from editorial assessment to a live listing. Developmental editing, illustration or audio production extend that. We give you a stage-by-stage schedule with your quote.
Yes. We offer ghostwriting and manuscript development for authors with a partial draft, an outline or a clear idea they have not been able to get onto the page. Tell us where you are up to and we will suggest a sensible starting point.
Paperback and hardcover print files, reflowable ebook files for Kindle and other retailers, and audiobook production to retail specification. Each is a separate build, and you can take any combination.
